Igorjem Vuksanovićem in g. Alijem Žerdinom. Okroglo mizo je moderirala ga. Ivana Gradišnik.

We concluded our series of round-table discussions with a debate on freedom of speech during the pandemic. The event took place in the Atrium of the ZRC SAZU on Tuesday, 29 March 2022, at 6 pm. During the pandemic, freedom of speech has been shaped by “independent” “fact-checkers”, “cancel culture”, suspensions of accounts on social media and other forms of concern for public interest that are surprisingly similar to censorship, political purges, appointments based on ideological affinities rather than merit, corporate interests, hate speech … On the one hand, at least part of the public is increasingly critical of the mainstream media, especially public broadcasting services; on the other hand, there has been an explosion of independent media, many of which have no professional, ethical etc. standards. How has the pandemic transformed the mediascapes in our country and around the world? What does this mean for freedom of speech? And what is the fate of critical intellectuals whose work and opinions go against the grain of mainstream narratives?
Prof Sandra Bašič Hrvatin, Dr Tomaž Mastnak, Mr Igor Vuksanović, Mr Ali Žerdin shared their thoughts on these issues. The discussion was moderated by Ivana Gradišnik.
